Everybody Plays, Every Position
Everybody plays should be the mantra for all youth sports
organizations. AYSO was created on this philosophy and it has been
adopted, in principle, by most youth sports leagues, parents and
coaches. Youth sports (ages 5-12) is about teaching sports to
children. Children can not learn if they cannot play. They can not feel a
part of the team or have a chance to learn from their mistakes if they
are always watching from the bench, or from right field. Where a child
plays and the role he or she is asked to take on is equally as
important as playing time. They know that the action is in the infield,
not in right field. They get the message that the coach does not think
they can dribble when they are always sent down the court while the
same player dribbles it down each time. If they always play on the
defensive end, how will they know what it feels like to score?
"When the game is on the line and tensions are running high, it can take a high level of moral courage to keep our focus on what is really important, but if we can do that, we will teach our children an invaluable lesson."
